In almost every aspect of life there will always be issues concerning race or gender. Sports is one area where both are evident. My roommate is a Sport Management here at the University of Texas and often brings up this issue. After doing further research on this topic, it is interesting to see how it exists.
Whether its on the TV, or proven in studies, white males are dominant in sports. One report I looked at was a list of the 28 most powerful people in Sports. Twenty- five of them were white males who had executive positions and only 2 were Hispanic and African American. No females were on the list. When looking at media coverage the majority of sports shown are men's teams. That is why most of the commercials shown during sports games are for beer, car, or tool and hardware companies directed for a male audience.
This ongoing issue raises some points to think about. Is the fact that females do not hold much power in sport because its a universal abnormality or because they simply lack the knowledge or expertise for the position? Do African American or Hispanic children realize a young age they might not get the recognition they receive and choose a different career path for their future? These questions are important to think about if we one day hope to rid the discretion in sports.
Observation:
If you walk into a store with a backpack on, employees watch you with more caution versus if you were just carrying a purse.
